What happens on the day of the drug test

So you've picked out your synthetic urine and now you're all set, right? Not quite, there's still a few things that you need to know before you go take the drug test.

You need to conceal the bottle of synthetic urine on your body when you go for the drug test. You can't just put it in your pocket. The best way to hide the fake pee is in Stash Undies, underwear designed with a hidden pouch.

Before the day of the test

The most important thing you can do before the test begins is to call the facility where you are taking the drug test and schedule an appointment. This helps you manage the temperature of your synthetic urine. If you don't have an appointment, you could end up sitting in the waiting room for hours as your urine drops below the acceptable temperature.

Preparing your synthetic urine

Mixing (Sub-Solution only)

Sub-Solution comes in two styles, regular and premixed. If you purchased the regular style, you will need to combine the synthetic urine powder with water. You should wait to do this until the day of your test. About an hour before you have to leave is ideal. Simply add the powdered urine (not the heat activator!) to the urine container, fill to just below the cap with lukewarm water, and shake gently until dissolved.

Your synthetic urine must be within 90 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit at the time of collection. If it isn't, the sample won't be accepted, and the facility may require you to provide a urine sample under direct observation (looking over your shoulder).

You should begin heating your synthetic urine about half an hour before you have to leave. To do this, take the cap off the urine bottle, and heat it in the microwave for 10 seconds. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it gently for a few seconds. Now check the temperature on the indicator strip. Real urine is around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit when it exits the body, so aim for 98 - 100 degrees with your synthetic urine. Keep microwaving it in 10 second increments until you hit this target temperature.

If you are using Quick Fix, now is the time to attach the heating pad. Sub-Solution users skip this step, as they will use heat activator powder later. Take the pad out of the wrapper and shake it a few times to activate it. Then use the rubber band to fix it to the bottle. It is crucial that you attach the pad to the side of the bottle opposite the temperature strip. If you attach it over the temperature strip it will read incorrectly.

Stashing your synthetic urine

You will be required to empty the contents of your pockets into a cabinet at the drug test facility. You will also be required to remove coats, sweatshirts, and other loose fitting clothing. This means you need to find a good way to conceal the synthetic urine on your body. Some people wear two pairs of tight underwear, inserting the urine bottle in between the two pairs. Other people have used ACE Bandages to wrap the bottle to their leg. These methods aren't foolproof. The safest way is to use a pair of Stash Undies. These have a secret pocket sewn in that holds the urine securely. Quick Fix sells a Stash Strap which, while not as secure as the Undies, may work for you. Whichever method you use, insert the urine bottle with the temperature strip facing out, not touching your skin. If the strip touches your skin, your body heat will throw off the reading. If you are using Sub-Solution, tuck your heat activator powder into the stash pocket as well. You will need it!

Final preparations

At this point you should have warm synthetic urine stashed in your pants somewhere, and it should be 15-30 minutes before you need to leave for the facility. Make sure you have looked up the address, know where it is, and how long it will take you to get there. While you are looking up the address, find a nearby business with a fairly large parking lot also. Make sure you are dressed fairly clean-cut, and your clothes don't reek of weed. Go through all your pockets, and leave everything you don't need at home. With these things done, you're ready to head to the drug testing facility.

At the drug testing facility

In the parking lot

Instead of driving to the drug testing facility, drive to the parking lot of a nearby business first. Park somewhere secluded, without a lot of traffic. It would be a good idea to scout out a location on Google Maps beforehand. Now, take your synthetic urine out of your stash, and check the temperature. It should be between 90 - 100 degrees, preferably around 98 - 100. If it isn't, follow these steps.

  • Too hot: Take any heating pads off, and let the bottle sit in your cupholder until the temperature drops within range. Turn on your car's A/C if necessary.
  • Too cold (Sub-Solution): Take out the heat activator powder and smack the vial on a hard surface a few times. Carefully pour about 1/8 of the powder into the vial's cap, then add it to the urine. Do not pour directly from the vial into the urine! It's very easy to overpour if you do this. Put the cap back on the urine, shake it gently for 10-15 seconds, then check the temperature strip. Repeat as necessary to get the urine to 98 - 100 degrees. Put the heat activator back in your stash spot, you may need it later.
  • Too cold (Quick Fix): Vigorously shake the heating pad, reattach it to the bottle, then stick it back in your stash until it heats up. Turn on your car's heater if necessary.

Once your bottle of synthetic urine is 98 - 100 degrees, stash it back in its spot. Check your pockets again, and make sure you leave everything you don't need in your car. Now you can head over to the drug testing facility.

At the counter

Go up to the counter, and bring any paperwork your employer gave you. The staff will check your ID, and may give you a form to fill out. Sit down in the waiting room, fill out the form, and take it back to them. Then you will sit again until your name is called.

It's important to note that the people working at the drug testing facility aren't out to get you. They're doing a job, and you're no different to them than the hundreds of other people who pass through every day. Be polite, but say as little to them as possible. Don't ask them any questions if you can help it, especially suspicious ones like “If they find something on the drug test what happens?” or “I was at a party and some other people were smoking pot, and I breathed it in. Do you think that will show up?”

Your name is called

A technician will take you outside the sample collection room. Here they will do a few things.

  • Have you remove everything from your pockets. They will lock these up so you can't access them during the sample collection.
  • Have you remove your coat, sweatshirt, and other loose fitting clothing. These will be locked up with the things from your pockets.
  • Have you wash your hands.
  • Turn off all water to the collection room, so it can not be used to dilute your urine.
  • Add blue dye to the toilet, so that water can not be used to dilute your urine.
  • Complete various sections of the drug test form.
  • Open a urine specimen container, hand it to you, and instruct you to fill it.
  • Instruct you not to flush the toilet.

There's quite a few things to take care of here. Just listen to the technician and do what they ask.

Producing the sample

You will go into the sample collection room, and lock the door behind you. The technician will wait outside the door. Unbuckle your belt, and/or unzip your pants, and take the synthetic urine bottle out of your stash spot. Check the temperature reading on the strip. It should be between 90 - 100 degrees if you followed all of the instructions. If it isn't, follow these steps.

  • Too hot: Take any heating pads off, and let the bottle sit on the floor or sink until it's in range.
  • Too cold (Sub-Solution): Take out the heat activator powder. Carefully pour about 1/8 of the powder into the vial's cap, then add it to the urine. Do not pour directly from the vial into the urine! It's very easy to overpour if you do this. Put the cap back on the urine, shake it gently for 10-15 seconds, then check the temperature strip. Repeat as necessary to get the urine within range.
  • Too cold (Quick Fix): Quietly shake the heating pad, reattach it to the bottle, then stick it in your armpit or groin until it gets within range.

Don't worry if heating or cooling the sample takes a while. Lots of people are bladder shy, so the employees are used to this. If they ask you any questions, just say you're “working on it”.

When your urine is between 90-100 degrees, quietly unscrew the cap of the urine bottle, and pour all of it into the specimen container. Your urine bottle may have come with a squeeze cap. These can make noise like a ketchup bottle, so it's better not to use them. Now, actually urinate into the toilet. Stop peeing mid-stream for about 10 seconds, then finish peeing. This will make it sound like you have actually urinated into the specimen container. Remember not to flush the toilet. Replace the cap on your urine bottle, and return it to your stash spot, along with any heat pads, rubber bands, or vials. Now you can take your sample to the technician.

After producing the sample

The technician will take your sample and read its temperature. If it's between 90 - 100 degrees it will be accepted. They will then pour your urine into two different sample tubes, and seal them. They will ask you to initial the seals. After this they will let you wash your hands. Then they will have you fill out your portion of the urine collection form. They will give you a copy, and you will be free to go.

What next?

If you sample was accepted by the drug testing facility, you are done and in the clear. It's normal to feel some anxiety about whether you will actually pass the drug test now, but if you used Sub-Solution or Quick Fix you almost certainly will. Congratulations! Now that you've passed your pre-employment drug screen, you can read about how to pass a random drug test at your workplace.
